Back in the laboratory

So yesterdays session worked out just fine. After beating my hangover into submission via tons of caffeine, coconut water, and a pearls buffalo burger, I stopped by The Hundreds to holler at the rellies. Humble as always, Alexander Spit did not bother to mention that his newest video had just hit the internet, and so, I discovered once arriving back at the crib johnson that Alex is crushing every single person right now with that Beat For the Street. After my second viewing, the inspiration had begun to build which I took to The Mission to meet Philo for another Ironfist session.

So far, the vast majority of the songs weve been working on are sample heavy, real throwback, 93 type stuff. You know, backpacks and all that? Setting us apart of course is the fact that we would never mention how we’re taking it back or real hiphop or the rest of that crap that rappers put in their shit to help their listeners decide if theyre real hiphop or on their side or not. I like to think our listeners are intelligent enough to figure it out for themselves. Anyway, what I was getting to is that, the beat we worked on yesterday was not one of these songs. Philo destroys these super synth heavy beats and I found this one more unique than anything he had ever done in the same vein. At 72 bpms, a 16 bar verse feels like 24, and so we each wrote a 24. We did not wrap it up, but the two verses turned out to be ridiculous. Next session were gonna write a 16 together for the middle verse, some back and forth shit, which I think we are really good at but have not introduced into the equation of the new album up to this point. We talked afterwards and decided this may be a great opportunity to get Monique on a track. You may have seen her singing at one of our shows, but if not, when the new Fist Fam cd is released, you will know her well. Shes great because besides the fact that she has a great voice, she can actually write really well. A breath of fresh air I assure you.

It may not look like much, but really this is all for pre-production. Our process is, drink, write, record, get the song exactly how we want it and iron out any kinks, then head over to the homie Irish Ricky’s studio for the actual vocals. We haven’t had an Ironfist session their yet but I did a verse for the Crazy Mob album and it all sounds real smooth, you’ll see. Anyway, I just ordered a Flip Hd Camera which should be coming next week, and soon after Ill be posting some videos of the studio and public drunkeness. If you dont know already, Fist Fam is playing the cd release party for our friends Gas Mask Colony tonite at El Rincon with a bunch of acts so fall through! Until next time…

Rec League

Last night after pre-gaming it up in Ronny Mac’s kitchen we strolled down to The Blarney Stone for a free Rec League show and BBQ. Ima just go on and put it out there, I got pretty damn drunk early and against my better judgement smoked weed for the first time in a while which set me off, so I didnt see all that much of the show. But what I did see was dope as usual. These guys are great live. Check out their website routinefly.com and download some of their plentiful free music. As you probably missed it last night, Im here to let you know that they will be playing the free show this Sunday in the park alongside Naughty By Nature, Tash, Qbert, and a whole lot more. Its funny to know people firstly as drinking buddies, only to discover that they actually make good music. Thank god, I may feel a little guilt telling em how much I liked their stuff every time we hang out if I didn’t. Plus, I think they actually like Dip Set more than I do, hard to believe I know. Dont miss em, they out here.

Playing catch up

So, time to bring yall up to date. Philo and I have been talking about working on a follow up to our 2004 release Esse Quam Videri since, well, 2004. Not that weve been sitting around rotting or anything (check out fistfamily.net for our other projects). Its just that the stars have not aligned til now, and so here we are. About a month ago I went to Philo’s studio, where all pre-production for this album will be done, and sat down to listen to some new beats Philo’s been working on. He finally made the big leap to the MPC 2000, and so a whole new sound has been emerging from his speakers. Anyway, he played a keeper, we got some beer, sat down, and wrote and recorded the first track for our new project. We mutually agreed that this was one of the finest songs either of us had worked on, and so… Since then we had, I believe, 4 or 5 similar sessions and it became apparent that a new Ironfist album was in the works. I didn’t keep my camera much til now so here’s what I got from a couple of Thursdays ago. I woke up, got a haircut, hit up The Hundreds to holler at the homies, and headed over to Dick Nasty’s to record a new solo song about time over a very daunting beat…

Dick Nasty is a real dope producer and a fine rapper at that. Check out The Dick Nasty Report to see what he’s up to.

The song came off and so I hopped on the 49 bus and headed to The Mission to meat Philo for carne asada tortas and rap music. Our rellie Eddie K was coming over anyway to get on a Crazy Mob track, and J Eaze had just gotten off work so, We made a new song.

The beat was hella fast and light-hearted which almost threw me off, but you know, this is how summertime jams are made. Anyway, a couple of hours and several beers later we had the new jam! This one may be my favorite though our first track was retarded, this one is just way too much fun.
eddie k
Eddie K is a legend in the bay, I first heard him in like 98′ and have always been a fan. Since that day, we’ve had two other sessions. One for the Liquor Sick album over a Conceit beat and another Ironfist track ft. LQ Savee. I aim to document the rest of the album process much more accurately so, now you’re caught up. More to come soon.
